Many teachers have a misconception that
math should be an easy subject for ELs because
numbers are “universal.” Math,
nowadays, is far more complex than just
numbers to calculate. To further limit its
accessibility for ELs, the language used
during math time is highly specialized,
isolated and increases in abstractness as
the school years progress. It is imperative
that teachers be aware of the linguistic
demands of learning math and provide the
right amount of support for students to
develop their conceptual understanding as
well as their academic language. Models
such as SIOP and SDAIE are made up of instructional
strategies to do just that. So, too, do
the resources provided on this site.
