LEARNING STRATEGIES
It is most critical that ELs develop academic learning strategies so they may become independent at their work. To ensure that strategy instruction actually transfers to independent work, teachers must EXPLICITLY teach those strategies. To do so explicitly, we must:
  • Name the strategy
  • Teach it
  • Model it
  • Create opportunities for them to use it
  • Remind them to use it on their own

READING STRATEGIES

Here are a variety of classroom posters for explicitly teaching reading strategies:

At the end of each lesson students should be provided the opportunity to metacognate about their learning, how they have been successful and challenged. Here are a variety of ways to take the last 5 minutes to do so:

MATH PROBLEM SOLVING

Many students want to speed through or skip the PROCESS of answering a math question and just guess at the PRODUCT or answer. Explicitly teaching the steps to be an effective mathematician can help students’ accuracy. These five steps are adapted from CALLA.

If the problem-solving strategies are explicitly taught all year for math word questions, these steps may be added as a test-taking strategy for CRTs and other standardized tests.
