ELD READING

Particularly for Newcomers, it is important to create a language rich environment. One easy way to start is by labeling the objects around the classroom. This can acquaint students with their surroundings and begin building their vocabulary.

Read alouds can create a contextualized opportunity for students to develop language, IF used appropriately. In an ELD read aloud, every question posed should be answered by students turning to their partners first, and then, if necessary, having one or two students share out whole group.

ELD UNITS

Instruction should teach language skills and concepts such as, but not limited to, oral language and vocabulary development, language forms, reading and writing as integrated language functions within a meaningful CONTEXT. This context allows students to have repeated exposure to vocabulary and forms through the four different language domains which deepen understanding. Students see how language is used in a variety of ways to create different meanings about the same topic. The easiest way to do this is to begin with a Read Aloud. Here are multiple units for lower grades and Newcomer students.
